April Fools? Debunking Wellness Myths
Happy April Fools’ Day! You may be able to prank your spouse, your kids, or your coworkers, but one thing you certainly shouldn’t joke about is your health. That’s why the Vein & Wellness Center at Anderson Heart & Vascular is here to debunk some silly wellness myths and get you on the right path to serious health. Read on to learn more about some of our treatments and the facts that back them up.
Myth: Varicose veins are only cosmetic, so I don’t need any vascular procedures.
Truth: Not quite! Beauty isn’t only skin deep, and neither are varicose veins. Varicose veins are caused by different issues but generally occur when your veins cannot efficiently pump blood back to your heart. This failure leads to poor circulation and can ultimately lead to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which can cause pain, swelling, skin damage, and even blood clots. Varicose vein treatments, like those we offer at Anderson Vein & Wellness Center, include saphenous vein ablations, sclerotherapy, and phlebectomies (also called varicose vein excisions). All three procedures are minimally invasive with a short healing and recovery process. Varicose and spider veins can severely impact your life, so take the first step toward better circulation by getting them removed quickly!
Myth: BOTOX makes your face look frozen. I don’t want to inject chemicals into my face just to look like that!
Truth: We’ve all seen the Hollywood stars who start with a little BOTOX and go overboard, leading to wooden, expressionless faces – and that can certainly deter people from wanting to try a BOTOX treatment. However, a “frozen” look only occurs with improper or high-dosage techniques. When administered properly, like by our injection specialist, Noel, BOTOX simply relaxes muscles, reducing lines while you can still maintain your natural facial expressions! Plus, small-dose injections are safe and approved by the FDA for both cosmetic and therapeutic uses. Whether you want to reduce wrinkles or are wondering if BOTOX may help your overall health (such as by lessening chronic migraine symptoms), it’s a perfectly safe treatment when given and monitored by experts.
Myth: Hormone replacement therapy just delays menopause.
Truth: There are tons of myths out there about hormone replacement therapy, especially as it pertains to menopause. As women age and enter perimenopause or menopause, their hormone levels drop drastically, causing symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, insomnia, and more. Hormone replacement therapy can help counter these symptoms – not postpone them – by boosting cardiovascular, cognitive, and bone health. The hormone replacement therapy offered at AHV is bioidentical, meaning the hormones we use are structurally identical to the estrogen and progesterone produced naturally in your body. We’ll work with you directly to build a hormone replacement program that’s right for your age, your body, and your lifestyle.
Myth: If I just eat better and work out harder, I can lose weight on my own – I don’t need GLP-1s.
Truth: While this approach may work for some people, it doesn’t work for everyone. And there is no shame in taking some assistance from weight loss medications and treatments like those we offer at AHV! We offer comprehensive weight loss and weight management plans, thanks to our partners at DrWell and through our on-site dietitian and counselor, Mallory Bell. We work closely with you through every step of the process, including in the selection of medication (such as tirzepatide or semaglutide), add-on treatments like Emsculpt NEO or Exion, and ongoing weight management strategies. After all, stubborn fat sticks around for a reason – and sometimes it takes more than just diet and exercise to get rid of it.
